What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is the ancient and timeless, science or knowledge of life, a holistic system of medicine which originated in India thousands of years ago. The first written texts originate around 5,000 years ago, in the form of Sanskrit verse or sloka in what are now known as the classical texts of Ayurveda.
The wisdom of Ayurveda is a vehicle towards achieving an optimum state of health and well being and is thus one of the most enduring and powerful systems of healing, available to everyone.
The tridosha theory is unique to Ayurveda. Vata, pitta and kapha constitute the chemical nature of every living organism: they are created by the five elements of ether, air, fire, water and earth. We are each a combination of the three constitutions, with one or two being predominant.
The specific make up of our constitution (Prakriti), taken together with many other factors such as genetic background, geography, diet, lifestyle, relationships and work, determines our unique nature. Our individual constitutional make-up is as unique to us as our DNA code. When the three dosha are in their natural proportions, there is balance. To heal is to restore something to its natural state of balance - it is the imbalance in our natural constitution which causes dis-order in the body and mind and creates dis-ease.

Lifestyle & Nutrition Consultations
At your initial consultation, you will have plenty of time to discuss your symptoms and concerns. Ayurveda emphasises balance in all areas of life so be prepared to talk a little about your yourself e.g. your diet, professional life, relationships, mental health, hobbies and exercise routines.
Sarah will determine any imbalances and identify the potential root cause of any disorders. In this way, a personalised treatment plan is created for you, which includes diet and lifestyle advice and simple home remedies to bring balance back into the system.
Sarah will talk through your recommendations during the consultation and your 3-week Ayurveda Plan is emailed to you shortly after, with full instructions for preparing the remedies.
Where appropriate, Sarah can prescribe natural Ayurvedic herbal supplements and medicines that further promote your healing process. These may include herbal tablets, powders, tonics, jams, teas, therapeutic oils and creams. An Ayurvedic treatment may also be recommended (available by Sarah or other Ayurvedic Therapists).
All Ayurvedic medicines and oils are ethically sourced in Sri Lanka and of the highest quality (please be aware of cheap products sold on the internet without the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic Doctor/Practitioner). Supplements are posted out within 24 hours of your consultation and normally last 3-4 weeks but sometimes last longer depending on the dosage and items prescribed.
A follow-up consultation is recommended after 3-4 weeks to check on your progress, make changes to your treatment plan as required and provide any new prescriptions.
You will hopefully start to feel much better in just a few days or weeks after your first consultation with Sarah, once you have put the diet and lifestyle recommendations into practice and the herbal remedies become part of your daily routine.
Why is a follow-up consultation so important?
Some disorders may take a little longer to treat and your Ayurveda Plan may have several twists and turns along the way, before you reach your health goals. Not all remedies work in the same way with everyone, sometimes you have to trial one or two before you find the herb, medicine or remedy that works best for you. Often, our bodies aren't ready for a full set of changes all at once, it can be too much of a shock to the system, so your Ayurveda Plan may start off with a few simple changes and gentle remedies, then gradually progress to stronger herbs that complete the healing process.
Your recommendations will adjust according to your progress, symptoms and strength. Once a healthy balance is found and the body is working in optimum condition, foods removed from the diet may gradually be re-introduced, but now you have learnt to recognise the early 'warning signs'.
If the body-mind shifts out of balance again, you are now equipped with a powerful knowledge of healing remedies and an intimate understanding of simple changes that can quickly make a big difference to you!
If you are unsure if Ayurveda is able to offer a suitable treatment for your condition, please get in touch and Sarah will happily give you a call to discuss your potential options.
